Alcoa Supports Geelong Health
01 October 2008
Alcoa, one of Geelong’s largest employers is continuing its involvement in the community with its ongoing workplace volunteering program for its employees.
Alcoa Point Henry, with the assistance of BacLinks (Business and Community Links) has an established calendar of community involvement for 2008, committing employees to volunteering for a range of community projects during the year.
The latest opportunity for Alcoa workplace volunteers to participate in supporting an activity in the community will take place with Barwon Health Foundation staff and volunteers on Thursday 9th October 2008.
Alcoa employees will support volunteers from the Barwon Health Foundation, which is the charitable arm of Barwon Health, to provide a voluntary driving and escort service to link people with Barwon Health facilities. In addition to this, Alcoa will present a cheque from the Alcoa Foundation and Alcoa staff to the Barwon Health Foundation to support the work that the Foundation do.
“Alcoa supports many projects throughout the community because it is our community- the home of our employees. BacLinks provide the link we need to community groups whose voices can often go unheard. We have been involved in many projects across the whole age spectrum. Projects have been chosen in consultation with our employees and have been rewarding on many levels,” said Judy Hase, Alcoa Making a Link Coordinator.
BacLinks Manager Sheree Holdsworth said, “It is encouraging to see support from business extending beyond financial contributions to participation at an employee level in community activities. There are so many ways businesses can contribute to their local community from workplace volunteering and in-kind support to the sharing of resources and collection of goods. And they don’t have to be as large as Alcoa – everyone can provide something of worth to assist those in need to our community. The possibilities are endless. Aged care residents, with high support needs, often find it difficult to get out in groups. This outing was made possible through the volunteer support provided by Alcoa employees” she said.
